American Horror Story is one of Netflix's most popular horror shows. While it is not an original Netflix series, many wait each year for Netflix's latest series to be released.

The series has paved the way for horror on television in a way that’s not been seen before. The series airs in an anthology format and reinvents itself each season.

How do we find a Netflix replacement for American Horror Story that is suitable? Well, we need the series to be deeply routed into the horror genre, we’re also looking for thrillers that are clever and we’re looking for shocking and pop culture icons.

Bates Motel

Bates Motel is a prequel film to Hitchcock's Psycho. It will be ending its last season in 2019. While it’s not as visually horrifying as American Horror Story, it’s phycological terror is something AHS plays on a lot throughout the show. The story is about Norman Bates, a young man who lives with his mother in a motel.

The Scream

Scream was founded in 1996, and has been continued in numerous sequels. It found new life in a MTV series a few years back. It tried to maintain the movie's atmosphere and make it more modern to be able to compete with horror shows like American Horror Story. To most fans, it’s done just that and has just been renewed for a third series.

Salem will make horror fans scream. The supernatural series currently only has two seasons on Netflix but with a third scheduled to air on WGN this Halloween, it’s a great time to get involved with the show. This series takes us to 17th-century witch trials and plunges us into the realm of the supernatural.

Hemlock Grove

Netflix hasn’t gone into horror all that much since Hemlock Grove wrapped up October last year. Based on the novel of the same title, the series tells the tale of a werewolf family living in an area populated by supernatural beings. Eli Roth produced a portion of the series. It appears that it has been canceled at this time, but who knows if Netflix will revive it.

Penny Dreadful

This show featured some of the greatest horror characters from the 19th Century, including Dr. Jekyll and Van Helsing as well as Frankenstein. It was sure to be an unforgettable horror fans' dream. The show ended after three seasons, but it achieved many of its goals. It still has a loyal fan base.
