After 2021 filming, the final season of After Life by Ricky Gervais will be available on Netflix January 20, 2022. Here’s an updated guide of everything you need to know about After Life season 3 including its release status, new cast, production updates, first look, and more.
After Life, in case you didn’t know, is a Netflix Original comedy series that features Ricky Gervais (and plenty of familiar faces if you follow his previous work such as The Office, Derek, or Extras) who plays the role of Tony. Tony is reeling from a devastating loss after the death of his wife. He now needs to find new purpose and pick up where he left off.
Season 2 of Netflix's Season 2 was released on April 24, 2020. The first season arrived back on March 2019, and Season 1 on Netflix in the United States on April 24, 2020.
Before we dig into everything you need to know about season 3, here’s the first look trailer released by Ricky Gervais on November 9th, 2021.
We received confirmation on December 14, 2021 that After Life season 3 will be available on Netflix worldwide on January 14th 2022.
Thankfully, we didn’t have to wait too long until Netflix pulled the trigger on the third season. The good news was confirmed by Netflix UK on May 6, 2020 in a concise tweet.
Ricky Gervais responded with his own tweet:
“Because so many of you watched #AfterLife2 so quickly and made it Number 1 again, the nice people at Netflix have suggested that I get off my fat arse and do another season.
This is all your fault.”
From the offset, the chances of After Life getting renewed in some capacity were high as we made the case for below.
Did the series become a huge success? We’ve never gotten any official numbers from Netflix but Gervais said more watched season 2 than season 1 (within a time period after releasing).
Ricky Gervais, who is also currently in the middle of his multiyear deal with Netflix, has not yet reached the end. It was signed in July 2019. After Life and Humanity were released as part of the deal. There are also at least two new projects that will be available after After Life's third season.
Ricky joked about the possibility of a third season, or as he chose with his other shows, an occasional special, when the deal was first announced. He said: “I do – unless I can get some of the cast to help me write the third series and just sit back and just turn up,”.
Ricky Gervais began to write shortly after season 3 was announced.
One of the first updates we got was on July 23rd, 2020 when on a live stream (and subsequent Tweet – see below) we got a first look at the draft for episode one of season 3.
All filming stopped in the UK, where After Life was filmed. Productions in the UK were able to get underway again in July 2020 according to areport from The Guardian. After Life, however, would take a little longer.
Finally, in August 2020, we got word via ProductionIntelligence that After Life season 3 was on track to begin filming in April 2021.
Further reports suggest that filming was set to take place over the course of “7 weeks”.
Ricky Gervais, who confirmed filming would begin on Monday April 19th, 2021 in April 2021.
Filming took over the spring and summer, with the filming ending on June 4, after 35 days.
The cast and crew attended a screening of After Life Season 3 on November 8, as confirmed by Michelle Greenidge.
Ricky Gervais often ends his show after only two to three seasons. After Life follows a similar pattern.
The Mirror reports that Ricky Gervais has confirmed that season four won’t be returning.
Gervais said:
“I’ve already made my mind up there won’t be a four.
“And you do put those things out there to make you remember as it’s tempting but… there’s an old saying that ‘to lead the orchestra, you’ve got to turn your back on the audience’.
“That’s true. The audience think they want another one, but they’re not sure. So you’ve got to be carefu
Let’s quickly run through the final events of season 2. During the town’s talent show where Tony seems to be recovering from his loss day by day, but he faces a further setback by the end of season 2. David Bradley plays his father. He succumbs to dementia at the nursing home. A formal funeral is expected to be held at some stage in the season.
Matt marriage seems to have been patched up throughout the course of season 2 but whether that’ll be long-lasting could be explored going forwards.

A third season's main plot would focus on the continuation of and, hopefully, the rescue of the local paper. Tony assured Sandy the paper would be continued and Tony appeared to enjoy having a new purpose.
We’ll also see how Tony copes with this loss of his Dad plus how the relationship blossoms (or burnout as the case may be) with Emma who finally got her name revealed in season 2.
The cast is still a mystery. We’d expect to see continued flashbacks via Tony’s laptop and new characters introduced.
Netflix published some photos from the first look of its final season on December 14, 2018.
He is currently working with Netflix to develop future projects, including stand-up specials and Supernature in 2022. He’s also had his next untitled series picked up by Netflix too.
