Netflix is being shut down by Disney. The library will lose six Marvel Netflix series, and every season of American Horror Story will be removed from Netflix worldwide in March 2022.
Over the past decade Ryan Murphy’s anthology horror series, American Horror Story, has been one of the most popular shows on television, and one of the standout shows available to stream on many Netflix libraries. In fact, it goes without saying that Netflix has played a massive contribution to the show’s popularity outside of the US.
The series has managed to remain on Netflix despite multiple removal notices from most countries in the past. However, the series will soon be leaving with many other Disney properties at the end of February 2022.
According to Unogs, Netflix has the show in at most six countries. All of these regions have removal dates.
Let’s run through which regions will see American Horror Story leave on March 1st:
Simply put, Netflix's streaming licence for this series has expired and will not be renewed. Given how many Disney properties are leaving all on March 1st, it has been speculated that rather than the licenses just expiring, they’ve instead been bought back.
The reason why the series is unlikely to be renewed is due to Netflix’s competitor Disney+. Since Disney’s acquisition of Fox in March 2019, and the release of Disney+ in November 2019, efforts have been ramped up to remove any licensed content and return it to the Disney brand.
You may already know that Disney+ is the next streaming platform you can stream American Horror Story. For example, Disney+ only has seasons 9-10 in the United Kingdom since Star launched. With the removal from Netflix, it’ll likely move over to there.
The series can also be viewed on Prime Video in the United States. However, we believe that those rights will soon be rescinded. Hulu has exclusive access to the series starting March 1, 2013.
