It’s been three years since Buffy the Vampire Slayer departed Netflix and in all likelihood won’t be returning. With that said, it’s not all bad news as we’ll explain below. Here’s why Buffy the Vampire Slayer isn’t on Netflix in 2020 and beyond.
First of all, if you haven’t heard of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where the heck have you been? The series aired from 1997 to 2007 and was broadcast on The WB, then UPN.
The story was about a young girl who discovers that she is responsible for killing vampires. Sarah Michelle Gellar is the main role of Buffy. Other notable talents include Nicholas Brendon and Anthony Head.
Joss Whedon and Marti Noxon are behind this project (more details in the second).
The series was due to be rebooted (although it’ll technically be a sequel series) but that’s yet to come to fruition.
Yes, that’s right, once upon a time, Buffy was on Netflix in its entirety.
As with all licensed content of major channel providers, in this instance Fox, many older licenses have been withdrawn from Netflix to be replaced by rival streaming services often owned or controlled by the original content owner.
At the time that it was removed on April 1, 2017, the series had been streaming online since 2012.
We mentioned that Fox is the owner of the show. It currently streams via licensing on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video.
Netflix UK had also access between June 2013 and June 2016 to the series.
It seems unlikely that Buffy the Vampire Slayer will return to Netflix.
However, there are some positive developments.
Marti Noxon, as we have already mentioned, is now working with Netflix under an output agreement that she struck in November 2018. The Witches of New York is one of her first projects. This sounds very similar to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, so be sure to keep an eye out for it.
That’s all we have for now. If anything changes and Netflix does manage to reacquire the streaming rights to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, we’ll let you know.
