Black Summer will be returning to Netflix for season 2, which is scheduled for June 2021. The zombie series, which has been suffering from production problems, is now ready for its second season on Netflix. Here’s the latest on the upcoming second season of Black Summer and everything we know so far.
Black Summer, a Netflix Original series about zombie-thrillers is created by Karl Schaefer & John Hyams. Set in the same universe of Z-Nation, the series is branded as a prequel to the beloved crazy zombie series but it’s more of a spiritual successor than anything else. It is more intimate than its companion series and has a darker tone.
A mother and her daughter are lost years prior to the Z-Nation events. Although it has some spiritual connections to Z-Nation it’s actually set on a very different timeline from the Syfy series which remains canceled to this day.
John Hyams, the Series' creator, confirmed that it would return in June 2021 in April 2021.
If you’re just here for the release date, season 2 of Black Summer is coming to Netflix on June 17th, 2021.
Official Netflix Renewal Status - Officially Renewed (Last Updated on 11/20/2019).
Netflix typically takes between one and two months to renew shows. Usually, Netflix releases information via its social media accounts. Black Summer was the exception. Everything was silent until October 2019.
In October 2019 we spotted an auction on eBay and a website called HollywoodCharityAuctions.com that offered fans the chance to go on set. They mentioned that the second season of Season 2 would begin filming in Winter 2019.
In November 2019, Netflix’s NX account confirmed that Black Summer would be returning for a second season at Netflix.
Jaime King also took to Twitter to express her happiness that they’re getting a second season. Kylie Newman, Jaime King's partner in the production of Black Summer, also confirmed that Jaime would also be producing season 2. In a separate Tweet, Jaime King said: “So excited to announce Black Summer season to you proud to star and produce this series with the most incredible human beings and artists!”
The filming of Black Summer Season 2 started in 2020. However, production was delayed for two weeks. We learned this on March 18, 2020. This meant that the next shoot would be in April 2020.
The filming was stopped as the pandemic gripped the country. A ProductionWeekly report from July 2020 stated that filming would resume on August 17, 2020.
Additional reports suggest that filming was delayed once more and moved back to September 3, 2020.
The first season of filming began in July 2018, and was completed by September 2018.
Karl Schaefer confirmed that filming was taking place in Calgary (Canada) in November.
We learned late September 2020 that Black Summer Season 2 had begun filming. Thanks to some of our commenters, we know that “They have been filming for 2 weeks straight in my town of High River Alberta. Just left yesterday and are heading south of Calgary for an airstrip scene.”.

There may be a split opinion on Black Summer's second season. Rose with her daughter, giving us one of few joyous moments from the first season.
Only Sun, Spears, and Rose were able to make it all the way to the stadium. Rose’s story is effectively concluded after reuniting with her daughter. Spears’ only motivations were to survive and help Rose on her journey. Meanwhile, Sun who doesn’t speak a word of English may have only been looking to be evacuated.
Black Summer
Vallez was the only survivor who had any motivation to keep the story going. Rose, however, had to mercifully kill him because he injured Rose and slowed down the rest of the survivors. Lance was also running from the growing number of zombies and is now AWOL.
The tsunami, which was hinted at heavily in the first season but never actually happened, is another example of the hordes. If Black Summer returns for a second season, the tidal wave of zombies can’t be too far aware, but considering how useless the protagonists are at killing zombies, it’ll be game over when it arrives.
Black Summer has room to grow, particularly if plans are made for it to be linked up with Z-Nation. We’d like to see the story of Black Summer, actually, go into detail about the event that’s mentioned on Z-Nation.
Paranoia and panic, mass starvation, and paranoia made this summer one of most difficult time periods in the apocalypse. This should be investigated more deeply.
In an exclusive interview with Alec Puro, the show’s composer, he dropped a few hints as to what we can expect musically from the second season saying:
“Season 2 of Black Summer has a whole new set of themes that reflect the new surroundings and characters within the show. I am also building upon previous themes from season 1 but the sound of the show has definitely evolved and is even more refined and targeted in this new season.”
