Brazilian Zombie Series ‘Reality Z’ Coming to Netflix in June 2020

Netflix is bringing Rejoice to Netflix, another Netflix Original series about zombies! We now have confirmation that Brazilian production company Conspiração’s production will be adapting the British zombie series Dead Set into Reality Z.

On the 24th April, the Rio Creative Conference Primetime panel confirmed that the Brazilian adaptation of British zombie series Dead Set had been produced. Claudio Torres, a Brazilian director is responsible for this adaptation. Torres will serve as the executive producer of the series alongside Renata Brandão. He will also share directing with Rodrigo Monte while the scriptwriting has also been handled by Torres and João Costa.

Conspiração is one of the largest independent feature film production companies in Brazil. Reality Z will be the first title that Netflix and Conspiração have collaborated.

Reality Z's plot will be based on the Dead Set structure. A synopsis has been given by Conspiração which is the following:

The show’s five episodes reveal a zombie apocalypse that imprisons participants and producers of a reality show called Olimpo, The House of the Gods, during its elimination night. The studio becomes a shelter for those who seek salvation in Rio de Janeiro, where chaos and hopelessness begin to rule.

Is Dead Set a real thing?

Charlie Brooker was the creator of Dead Set, a series for Channel 4, before Black Mirror. This series was a zombie-apocalyptic twist on Big Brother's reality show, which was huge at that time in the UK. Big Brother, a British reality show that allows a small group of strangers to live in the Big Brother House. The public could vote to eliminate their least favourite contestants.

Big Brother's concept is the same as Dead Set, except that the zombie apocalypse starts on the first elimination night. As the contestants wait for their first elimination, the zombies attack the producers and fans, eating them. The contestants were unaware of all the chaos that is occurring outside and have found refuge inside Big Brother House.

Reality Z was filmed in spring 2019. It’s unclear how long the filming went on for, but IMDb officially updated its status to Post-Production on 23rd March 2020.
