Netflix has renewed Dark for the third season, and possibly its final before its debut on Netflix's season 2 in June.
This renewal is just a month ahead of the second season, which will be available on Netflix June 21st. The sci-fi series was first announced all the way back in 2016 but didn’t arrive until December 2017.
This mind-bending series, which spans three time periods, sees two children disappear. It’s been highly rated with it currently sitting at one of the best scores on IMDb for any Netflix Original foreign series.
With the trailer for season 2, Netflix announced that it would conclude the trilogy.
Expected to arrive in 2020, rather than the two-year wait that was experienced between seasons 1 and 2.
Baran Boodar shared a message on Instagram about a third season.
“And it’s official! Dark Season 3 is in production. This is the last cycle in this amazing journey. We had always planned for three seasons when developing Dark. Now, we are excited to share with you that we plan on shooting the third season and the final episode in just 4 weeks. We are grateful to Netflix for trusting in us. THANK YOU TO ALL DARK FANS OVER THE WORLD You are Amazing!”,
Another important news is the shorter wait between season 2 and 3. This will make it significantly less time than between seasons 1 and 2. Dark will return to season 3 of the series in 2020, with filming starting later than usual in 2019.
They expected three seasons, having pitched the series to Netflix. However, Netflix chose not to renew season 2, even though season 1 had been released. Back in December 2018, Baran bo Odar spoke on a panel saying “we have ideas for three seasons because we don’t want to create something too unsatisfying at the end.”
As for where the story is going to go in season 3, we’re not too sure just yet. Season 2 is just around the corner and once it releases, we’ll be sure to look at what we can expect going into season 3 of Dark.
