Review Ethan / 2022-10-30 13:31:53

Grace & Frankie is returning to Netflix for season 6 at Netflix in January 2020 and if you’re looking for what’s new, what you can expect and who’s returning for season 6, we’ve got all you need to know. We’ve also got word on season 7 which is set to be the final in the series.

You may be aware that the sixth season of the series was renewed prior to the first episode on Netflix. The series has become Netflix’s second-longest-running comedy series only behind Orange is the New Black.

Netflix hopes to continue Grace & Frankie, which is co-created by the same person who created Friends.

Since 2015, we’ve seen new seasons of the comedy show every single year. Both the first and third seasons were released in May 2017, while the third was released in March 2017. Seasons 4 and 5 both released in January.

Is season 6 of Grace & Frankie still in production?

Status: Current (last update: December 2019).

The production of season 6 started almost immediately after season 5's release on Netflix.

We’ve also seen a few snaps of Jane Fonda and other cast members and crew on set for season 6 of Grace & Frankie. We’ve embedded them below but with special thanks to the Grace and Frankie Fans Twitter account for being an excellent resource.

Season 5 Recap and what to expect from Grace & Frankie's season 6

Let’s recap the events of season 5 and see where that could take us for season 6 of Grace & Frankie.

The final episode of season 5 saw Grace & Frankie reminisce about the last three years and discuss how life would’ve panned out differently if they hadn’t lived with each other over the past three years.

Grace and Frankie may be facing major changes. They might need to change their living arrangements. This is understandable considering Grace was married to Nick last season.

Who’s returning for Grace & Frankie season 6?

Thanks to IMDb, we’ve got quite a few confirmations of who will be returning. Naturally, Jane Fonda's and Lily Tomlin's title characters will return.

These are other actresses and actors who have been confirmed to be returning:

  • Sam Waterston is Sol
  • Martin Sheen is Robert
  • Brooklyn Decker is a Mallory
  • Ethan Embry is a Coyote
  • June Diane Raphael is Brianna
  • Baron Vaughn and Nwabudike Berstein
  • Barry is Peter Cambor
  • Peter Gallagher is Nick
  • Michael Charles Roman is Adam

Returning to sit in the director’s seat for season 6 includes Ken Whittingham who will be directing episode 7. Episode 6 will be directed by Betty Thomas, actress and director.

Aris Alvarado and Miranda De Meo are among the cast's new members, mostly in smaller roles, while Kasey Mahaffy and Tamika Simpkins play more prominent parts.

Dolly Parton will appear on Grace and Frankie season 6.

Grace and Frankie featured many celebrities in its history, with RuPaul making an appearance throughout the entire season. This season, many have speculated and in fact, demanded that it’s finally time for Dolly Parton to have a role in Grace & Frankie. Fonda and Tomlin were famous performers in 9 to 5, back in 1990s.

It’d make perfect sense that the show would feature Dolly Parton this year given she’s about to appear in a Netflix anthology series due out later this year called Heartstrings.

Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in 9 to 5

Tomlin has said it’s a longtime goal to get Parton to appear saying: “We’d like to see Dolly and we keep hoping we’ll work out a schedule, but she’s just so busy,” but ultimately concluded “She does so many things, and now she has a big show deal herself at Netflix, so I don’t know.”.

What number of Grace & Frankie episodes will there be in season 6?

Nothing confirmed as of yet but given the fact all five seasons thus far have had 13 episodes, it’d be mad to consider this season being any different.

What time will Grace & Frankie season 6 be available on Netflix?

The series won’t be back until early 2020 at the very earliest. To begin with, all we knew is that: “Grace and Frankie will return for a sixth season in 2020 on Netflix.”. Netflix announced in September 2019 that Grace and Frankie Season 6 would be available on Netflix beginning January 2020.

In December 2019, it was confirmed that Grace & Frankie Season 6 would be released on Netflix January 15, 2020.

Ali Goldstein / Netflix

It is possible that the show will return to Netflix in January 2020, which was also its time slot for season 5. That would be notable because Marta Kauffman’s other notable project, Friends, is due to leave Netflix in the US in that month.

It has been renewed for the seventh season. The series will be released in January 2021.

Some fans haven’t been too happy about the seventh and final season announcement.
