Guillermo del Toro and Patrick McHale are bringing to Netflix a dark version of Pinocchio's classic tale. Here’s an updated guide to everything we know about the animation project which is coming to Netflix in December 2022.

It’s first worth noting that Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro has been a project on his docket for quite some time as we’ll talk you through below. However, we hope that many of his interviews are still relevant and useful in terms of what can be expected.

We were treated to a preview of the project in January 2022. Also, the announcement that Netflix will host the film on December 2022 was made.

Although the film was first made in 2011, it became a movie in 2011. It was first announced that a stop motion animated movie would be produced. Matthew Robbins and Guillermo del Toro wrote the script, while Mark Gustafson and Gris Grimly directed. Pinnochio's darker tale would take its inspiration from the 2002 book, which was illustrated and published by Gris Grimly.

Now, it's been many years since production began. Gris Grimly quit and Del Toro took over as the leader. The Jim Henson Company also stepped in to assist with production. It was believed that the project had been abandoned by Del Toro in November 2017.

Netflix announced that the film would finally be released in October 2018.

What time will Pinocchio be available on Netflix?

The film had been expected to be released in 2021, but it is now known that the movie will arrive in December 2022.

Matt Neglia, NextBestPicture's film critic (who listed the movie as one of the most likely nominees for the Oscars), said that the movie was moved to 2022. As we’ll get into shortly, a delayed production schedule due to COVID-19 could be the issue.

2022 is the Year of the Pinnochio.

Pinnochio, Disney's most famous for its participation in the IP, will face off against Netflix. Robert Zemeckis is on board to direct the movie which is planned to be a lot more family-friendly than the version we’re talking about here.

Lionsgate has joined the fray with Pinocchio, A True Story. The animated feature film will be available on VOD in March 2022.

Pinocchio takes so long to make?

Put simply, it’s a huge project that requires lots of time. It is notoriously costly and time-consuming for stop motion movies to be made. You can see the entire movie in the below timelapse.

Pre-production (according to IMDb) started in March 2019 with all the filming taking place in Portland, Oregon it’s then believed the movie actually began physical production in January 2020 before entering post-production in June 2021.

Pinocchio: What do we know?

Guillermo del Toro answers questions about Crimson Peak in an interview from 2015. Guillermo del Toro talks to HeyUGuys who tells them that he’s really using the source material that’s “strange in a disturbing way” when compared to the Disney movie.

“We’re bringing back some of the fairytale charms of the book”. He also speaks a little that it’ll be touching on the history of when the book was written specifically the politics of the era.

This was reiterated by Del Toro in October 2018, when he stated the following:

“It’s not a Pinocchio for all the family. Of course [it’s a political film]. Pinocchio during the rise of Mussolini, do the math. A puppet during the rise of fascism.”
