Netflix has put out some stunning documentaries in the past few years and they hope to continue that with season 1 of a new documentary series called ‘The Keepers’. Seven-part series will examine the true story of the murder of Cathy, a nun. Below,  we’re going to take an in-depth look at the documentary series and a preview for you dive in when it lands on Netflix worldwide on May 19th, 2017.

This series will focus on the mysterious disappearance of Cathy Cesnik (a prominent Baltimore nun), and her subsequent death. The case remains open to the public. The series is similar to the popular Netflix series Making a Murder. It will examine the official story and investigate other theories.

The story takes a massive turn when in the 1990’s one of Cathy’s former students comes out and reveals of a widespread sexual abuse scandal that took place plus additional details that have been refuted since.

Who’s behind the series?

Ryan White is the director of the show who has worked on an HBO documentary movie called The Case Against 8 which takes a look at a political battle that took place to overturn California’s Proposition 8. The documentary was released in 2014. He also has worked on a documentary called Good Ol’ Freda which follows the creator of The Beatles fan group. He recently produced Serena, the documentary about Serena Williams, which takes an inside look at the life of Serena Williams, the female world tennis champion.

Sadly, none of Ryan White’s back catalog is available on Netflix.

The Trailer for the Keepers

This trailer, which is 2 minutes long, aired on April 19th and gives us an idea of what we can expect from the new documentary series. This documentary series features real-life accounts from people who knew Cathy and historians that provide insights into what happened.

Netflix: What to Watch Similar to The Keepers

While you’re waiting for the new series to drop, here’s a few suggestions. It's similar to Making a Murderer, as we mentioned earlier. The series focuses on Steven Avery, who is allegedly falsely charged with a crime of murder. The series is slightly longer and definitely takes a bit more of an in-depth approach, especially when it comes to the court scenes, but overall it’s a great alternative. A second season of the series is in development.

Team Foxcatcher is another Netflix Original worth your attention. This murder was eventually solved but it tells the heartbreaking story about a public figure.
