Netflix’s latest international import from Belgium has already been renewed for a second season. Here’s what you need to know about season 2 of Undercover.
First of all, we want to drive the distinction of what series we’re talking about. Netflix has actually three Undercover titles. We’re covering the Dutch title from Belgium that first arrived on Netflix on May 3rd.
The series is primarily aired by Eén which is a Belgium broadcaster.
Although the series is a Netflix Original there’s plenty of caveats. As Netflix’s distribution description explains by saying it’s available everywhere as of May 3rd but with a “subsequent launch in France, Germany, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland.” We still don’t know when season 1 of Undercover will be available in the other countries listed above.
It received rave reviews both in the country where it was filmed and from Netflixers all over the globe.
Status of official renewal: Netflix has renewed the contract, but it is not yet confirmed. (Last update: 06/16/2019).
Multiple sources have confirmed that production on season 2 has begun, despite not being officially confirmed.
The Belgian TV station that airs the show confirmed the news. Season 2 filming started in April 2019
The second season is expected to continue the story, but will be more focused on guns than season 1. Season 1 was primarily about the Belgian drug trade.
Tom Waes confirmed that he will be back for season 2, as Bob Lemmens, who will meet up with Kim again.
Nico Moolenaar, showrunner has stated the following (roughly translated), regarding season 2.
“In season two, Bob and Kim go into the world of the illegal arms trade. Like XTC, weapons and weapons are an important export product for Belgium. Our small country is a major player in the international arms trade, with annual sales of around 500 billion worldwide One of the most notorious arms smugglers ever used Ostend airport as a base, and a Belgian played a dubious role in dozens of conflicts in Iran, Bosnia, Libya and Pakistan, among others. an inconspicuous existence, and where do you find such an existence better than under the Flemish church tower? That our country is at the center of so much organized crime is of course a serious problem, but for us as scriptwriters also a bit of a gift. Season two again promises to guarantee a lot of excitement, emotion and humor.”
Given the series' rapid renewal, it is likely that they will be available on Netflix in 2020.
It’s also clear 2020 makes the most sense given that filming is due to conclude in September 2019.
