One of Ubisoft’s biggest gaming franchises is coming to Netflix! At their gaming panel for gaming’s biggest event of the year, Ubisoft confirmed that The Division has been picked up by the streaming service and will likely arrive sometime in 2020. There’s little known on the details of the film but we have all the details you need to know so far below.
We'll explain what The Division actually is to those who don't know. First debuting in the Spring of 2016, The Divison was one of Ubisoft’s most ambitious games to date. At its peak, the third-person shooter reached over 20 million downloads across all platforms. Although the launch was slow, DLC released in the end really helped the game's quality. Three months later, The Division 2 launched.
Two actors were already confirmed to be playing roles in The Division. Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko, Southpaw) and Jessica Chastain (Molly’s Game, Zero Dark Thirty) will star in the film but their roles have yet to be confirmed. Both actors will be playing lead roles in the film. They have also been given the role of producers.
Director of Deadpool 2 and Hobbs and Shaw filmmaker Davd Leitch was assigned. Meanwhile the screenplay will be written by Amazon’s Wheel of Time writer Rafe Judkins. In the next few months, we will learn more about the cast members and crew.
The virus epidemic that decimated the New York City population has caused it to collapse in the near future. Millions of people died from the virus that spread via Black Friday's use of cash. New York City is now in quarantine. It has been chaotic and brutal. The remaining population is fighting for their survival every day. A select group of elite operatives are trained to handle such situations and sent into the city to search for survivors.
We’re unsure at this point if the films story will be based upon the first or second game. While the most likely scenario is the latter, we expect some major changes in order to make the film fit into the two-hour time frame.
We’re a long way off from knowing the release date but we’re expecting the film to drop in 2020. Consdiering the film is set in Winter this may impact the film’s release date. We predict that the film will be released during the holidays season of 2020.
