On February 1, 2013, Netflix made history by releasing its original series House of Cards seven years ago. Since 2013, Netflix has made a lot of progress. Over 1000 new Originals have been created since 2013. We’re taking a look back on some of the cast members of House of Cards, and where they are now in 2020.

House of Cards, a Netflix Original Political-Drama Series, is based on the British Drama of the Same Name. The series is one of Netflix’s most critically acclaimed but also one of the most controversial in the streaming service’s history. House of Cards was nominated for 27 Emmys out of 223 and won 2 Golden Globes. House of Cards will always be remembered as the original web-only series that received Emmy nominations.

Michael Kelly's portrayal of Doug Stamper, was a wonderful experience on House of Cards. Kelly has since worked on the Amazon Prime Original, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, but during his time working on House of Cards, he also starred in the FX series, Taboo, the mini-series The Long Road Home, and even featured in popular sci-fi series Black Mirror.

He won his first Oscar for Best Actor, Supporting Role, in 2016's Moonlight as Juan. Ali’s second Oscar would come two years later for his work on the film Green Book as Don Shirley, a second win for the category of Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

Academy Awards aside, one of Ali’s best roles came as Cottonmouth in the Netflix Original series Daredevil. The series' short time he spent on it was very impactful and left an indelible void. Although Kate Mara was the least active on House of Cards, she played a significant role in the success of the show. Frank Underwood murdered her in season two, and she would come back to haunt Frank in a hallucination. This strongly indicates that President Trump feels guilty for their deaths.

Mara has gone in to star in plenty of roles, her biggest being Sue Storm in Fox’s failed reboot of the Fantastic Four franchise. Mara is scheduled to play the role of Claire on the new series A Teacher, which will debut sometime in 2020. Drama will examine the consequences and complexities of a male student being a teacher to a woman.

Appearing 50 episodes across 4 seasons, it’s surprising Derek Cecil’s character Seth Grayson lived till the end. Knowing a very intimate amount of knowledge about the Underwood’s thanks to acquiring Frank’s journal, he used the information to force his way onto the Underwood’s staff as Director Of Communications and Press Secretary.

Nathan Darrow

Portrayed: Edward Meechum Number of Episodes: 35

Nathan Darrow did an excellent job of portraying Frank Underwood’s bodyguard Edward Meechum. Doug Stamper had a similar loyalty to Darrow, but it cost Frank his life when he tried to assassinate Frank.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Darrow’s character was his relationship with the Underwoods. The second season shows Meechum having a trio with the Underwoods, but is also shown to have kissed Frank and Claire. This scene, which was set a few years prior to Kevin Spacey's sexuality revelations in the wake the the accusations against him, is more shocking than what we now know about Spacey.

Darrow is now a star on Fox's Gotham as Victor Fries, (Mr. Freeze). Darrow played the part of Webster in Godless, an Original Series.  Darrow also appeared on six episodes of Preacher, but he was most recent in Dependance, a drug-related drama.

Kevin Spacey

Portrayed: Kevin Underwood Number of Episodes: 65

The most polarising and controversial cast members of them all, Kevin Spacey’s fall from grace has been nothing short of dramatic. Spacey was accused of sexual misconduct and quit the part of Frank Underwood. This ultimately led to Spacey's death on-screen.

Spacey has not starred in any film since the allegation. Having filmed the movie before the allegations arose, it ultimately had a detrimental effect on the films commercial ‘success’. In the opening weekend Billionaires Boy Club only made $618 at the box office making it the worst opening of Spacey’s career. Spacey was removed from All the Money in the World and Christopher Plummer was cast as John Paul Getty.

Despite Frank Underwood’s death, Kevin Spacey has taken it upon himself to reprise the role in two short films. The first ‘Let Me Be Frank’ rebuked the allegations made against him. A year later in the short ‘KTWK’ he would wish viewers a Merry Christmas.

Spacey was cleared from any sexual misconduct charges, but the scandal has impacted his career and reputation. The veteran actor filmed his role for Michael Hoffman’s film Gore, but despite being completed since December 2018, the film has yet to see the light of day.
