‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 3: Netflix Release Date & What You Need to Know

It has been a long wait for everyone’s favorite dysfunctional superpowered family to return, but finally arriving in June 2022 is the highly anticipated third season of The Umbrella Academy. Here’s everything we know so far, including the trailer, casting news, and the Netflix release date.

The Umbrella Academy is a Netflix Original superhero-comedy-drama series created by Steve Blackman and based on the comics of the same name by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá.

The superhero phenom has gripped audiences around the world for the better part of a decade, it’s taken something special like The Umbrella Academy to add some much-needed freshness to the genre.

The second season of the series was released July 31, 2020. It has received 4 Emmy nominations, including best cinematography and best fantasy/sci fi costumes. Sound editing and special visual effects were also nominated.

Is The Umbrella Academy renewed for Season 3?

Official Renewal Status Renewed

The Umbrella Academy had been renewed for the third season for some time before the first season was released. It soon became the world’s worst kept secret that The Umbrella Academy was being renewed at Netflix, and it was officially confirmed in November 2020.

It’s no surprise that The Umbrella Academy has been renewed for a third season. It is a hugely popular series among subscribers, and it was one of the most anticipated Originals that will return in 2020.

What time will The Umbrella Academy season three premiere on Netflix?

Netflix will stream the third season of Umbrella Academy on Friday June 22nd 2022.

During Netflix’s Geeked Week, writer and showrunner Steve Blackman gave us a peek at the third season by revealing the episode titles.

The Umbrella Academy Season 3: What can you expect?

Season two's finale contained some big surprises, and left us wondering what the next season will bring.

Sparrow Academy

Upon making their return to the future, The Umbrella Acadamy discovered some of the consequences of their actions in the past.

Sir Reginald, who is still alive and well, reveals The Sparrow Academy's shocking existence. Five figures, and a green glowing cube, appeared before the Umbrella Academy on the second floor of the library, only for the most shocking reveal of them all to appear, Ben Hargreeves is in fact alive and well, and doesn’t know who these “assholes” are.

Thanks to their meddling in Dallas, it’s clear that a new timeline has been created, one that doesn’t include the existence of the Umbrella Academy.

Without realizing it, the Umbrella Academy revealed to Sir Reginald his future self’s mistakes. Sir Reginald had only limited information about their 1989 births and wanted to avoid repeating the mistakes of his past. He adopted two different children. Ben was likely still adopted because his identity was never revealed during the events of “A Light Supper.”

This new timeline shows Ben as the Number One.

Harlan, a grown-up

Although Harlan had removed her powers, the ending of season revealed that Harlan's young son has at most telekinetic capabilities.

Harlan would have been 64 years old in 2019, so he'll be a veteran with his telekinetic skills. It’s unlikely he would have forgotten Vanya, and the rest of The Umbrella Academy in that time.

Harlan could be the next villain or an ally of The Umbrella Academy.

Lila Pitts is where?

Star-crossed lover of Diego, Lila Pitts is easily the most powerful individual we’ve seen in the entire series so far. Lila was able to make her escape using one of The Commission’s briefcases to escape to an unknown period of time.

Lila only just discovered the truth about the death of her parents, so it’s highly plausible the next time we see her, she’ll be in the process of trying to save their lives. She’s in a very fragile state of mind, so if Lila isn’t careful her actions could have disastrous consequences.

She could be forced to find a new handler if she fails to stop Five and The Handler killing her parents.

It’s also highly likely that Lila will, at some point, try to reunite herself with Diego.

Alternative versions of Umbrella Academy?

Sir. Reginald choosing to adopt other children than the Umbrella Academy's original members, this would mean that there will be alternative Hargreeves versions.

It is known that Vanya was born and raised in Russia. Therefore, if Sir Reginald did not remove her from Russia, then her extraordinary, destructive power will be at the disposal of the Kremlin. Her violin playing prowess is likely to light up the stage around the globe.

As for the remaining members of the Umbrella Academy, we’re not sure where they were born.

It’d be fun to see alternative versions of The Hargreeves, and further shocking secrets from the source material could yet be revealed.

Many fans were left asking if Elliot Page would still play the role of Vanya Hargreeves, after he recently revealed that he was trans-man. Netflix confirmed almost immediately that Elliot will continue to play the role Vanya Hargreeves on future episodes of The Umbrella academy.

Netflix retroactively scanned all movies and series featuring Elliot Page, and updated the credits.

Casting News

We received our first official castings in January 2021. They were primarily for the Sparrow family.

They include:

“Justin Cornwell is MARCUS (Sparrow #1) – a natural born leader that oozes confidence and keeps the family together who is equally as charming as he is chiseled and colossus.

Justin H. Min is BEN (Sparrow #2) but not the one we know. This Ben is scheming, tactical and vicious, determined to gain his status as leader.

Britne Oldford is FEI (Sparrow #3) sees the world in a special way. She’s typically the smartest person in the room and willing to negotiate – yet, once you cross her, there’s no turning back.

Jake Epstein is ALPHONSO (Sparrow #4) a scarred crime-fighter with a caustic and biting sense of humor who enjoys verbally berating his enemies, almost as much as he enjoys a good pizza and a six-pack of beer.

Genesis Rodriguez is SLOANE (Sparrow #5) a romantic dreamer eager to see the world beyond the academy. Even though she feels tied down to her family, Sloane has plans of her own…and she may just act on them.

Cazzie David is JAYME (Sparrow #6) a loner with a fear-inducing snarl you’d be wise to avoid at all costs. She doesn’t say much because she doesn’t have to.

EXISTENTIAL DREAD INDUCING PSYKRONIUM CUBE is CHRISTOPHER (Sparrow #7) a telekinetic cube that can turn the room freezing cold and induce paralyzing fear without so much of a warning. The trustworthy, loyal oracle of the Sparrows is treated as just another sibling.”

Is The Umbrella Academy Season 3 in production?

Official Production Status: After-Production. (Last Modified: 02/09/2021).

Filming began for the third season in February 2021, as we discussed previously. According to some reports, filming began in October 2020. ProductionWeekly provided a follow-up report that confirmed filming would start on February 8, 2021.

Elliot Page confirmed that production had begun. On February 16th, he posted a picture on Instagram with the caption “Omg we’re back again”.

The filming process will last several months and should be completed by August 17, 2021.

On Zoom, a table reading took place between cast members on February 5, 2015. Steve Blackman’s Instagram account revealed that filming began on February 7th.

We know that each season of The Umbrella Academy takes 18 months due to the interview we had in February 2019 with Steve Blackman, showrunner.

As of July 20,21, the show was still being filmed. There are some great snaps and videos including this one below that shows them filming at Court Street.

The Umbrella Academy cast announced that filming had ended on season 3 as of September 1, 2021.

Is the Umbrella Academy's third season the final?

Despite all the ongoing jokes about Netflix canceling shows before they make it to four seasons, we highly doubt they’ll be stopping the story at 3 seasons.

Gerard Way, comic creator and showrunner of Steve Blackman has given him an 18-page document.

If there are 18 pages of in-depth detail into the story, and characters, it suffices to say we’ll be seeing plenty more of The Umbrella Academy.

The Vulcan Reporter, our friends has informed us that season 4 continues to be actively planned and is on the verge of being renewed.
