Will ‘Agent Carter’ come to Netflix?

Who’d have thought that the Marvel universe would’ve expanded this quickly to even give smaller characters like agent Peggy Carter her own show. Marvel’s new strategy seems to be saving the big guns; such as Iron Man, the Hulk, Captain America and Thor for movies but expanding the universe for lesser known characters for the television series format. In 2014, ABC revealed that Agent Carter was being developed by the network to complement Agents of Shield, which is aired every fall.

Of course, ABC isn’t alone in creating Marvel programming with Netflix joining the roster earlier this year with their first new original series, Daredevil.

If you’re not familiar with Agent Carter here’s some background information on the show. Agent Carter played the role of Captain America's love interest in the film. However, it became clear that she was much more than this. Agent Carter, set in the 1940’s, follows her on some of her top secret missions and living the life of a single woman in America. We get to meet the original Jarvis as well as a returning appearance for Tony Stark’s father. The show recently renewed for a second season and is expected to start airing next January.

Since July 2015, when we wrote the article, a lot has happened. The show was cancelled and a huge fan petition started to reinstate the show onto Netflix Originals.

When Ted Sarandos was questioned about the show’s revival hopes he quashed any attempt at getting a season 3 of the show. Asked why they wouldn’t renew they show Ted said : “We’re looking for truly original brands to own, and in that Marvel space we already have [original comic book shows] – so that was mostly why.” adding “They (ABC) also have some output deal complexities. So when you pick it up, being able to pick it up globally is difficult even after it’s canceled. Some of those output partners still had it on the air, so they would argue it’s covered by their output [deals]. Unfortunately, it was a business decision more than a creative one.”

So that’s season 3 out of the question but will seasons 1 and 2 of the show ever come to Netflix? Sadly it doesn’t look like it will given the complex deals mentioned earlier. Although as time passes, it’s likely that Agent Carter will be able to come to Netflix at some point but for now at least, you’ll have to stream it elsewhere.
