Will ‘Rocketman’ be Coming to Netflix?

Many have been waiting for the Elton John biopic Rocketman after the huge success of Bohemian Rapsody. The film was well-received by both critics as well as fans. The most pressing question, however is when Rocketman will be available on Netflix. Unfortunately, it might not be available for some time. Here’s why.

Rocketman, a musical biopic about Elton John's early years of career, is directed by Dexter Fletcher. Dexter Fletcher, who was also involved in the filming of Bohemian Rapsody's final two weeks after Bryan Singer quit the project, directs the film. However, he is not credited but was recognized as executive producer. Taron Egerton stars as the legendary artist. Taron worked previously with Fletcher in the biopic Eddie the Eagle.

Notably, all the performances by Taron Egerton as Elton John were sung by the actor, meaning there was no lip-syncing to Elton’s singing throughout the entire film.

Rocketman tells Elton John's story of stardom. Not without controversy, behind Elton John’s flamboyant on-stage persona was a man plagued by sex, drugs and the increasing pressure of revealing his sexuality to a hostile world.

Rocketman coming to Netflix US

Rocketman is not yet confirmed by Netflix US. Although this might seem disappointing, there are reasons to believe the biopic will eventually be available on the streaming site.

Viacom, the parent company to Paramount, and Netflix worked closely throughout 2018 and 2019. Paramount has recently released the most recent animated films to Netflix, while Nickelodeon is receiving a lot of material.

Paramount and Netflix have reached a partnership to make films available on the streaming platform. This was announced in August last year. There is also potential for streaming deals between both companies, with Paramount's streaming service being removed.

Hulu, Amazon and Netflix might not grant Netflix the right to stream Rocketman. These streaming services currently receive the most recent releases from Paramount. This is due to a Paramount deal, which has been in effect since 2010, and was renewed in 2015. As 2020 approaches there’s no reason why Paramount wouldn’t be open to renewing this deal once again. If 2020 arrives, Netflix will likely be able to broker the deal.

Rocketman will be available on Netflix from other countries.

If Paramount’s latest title released to streaming services Mission Impossible: Fallout, then we may be able to predict where Rocketman is headed.

The UK's Sky and Now TV are the most likely destinations for Paramount titles. Sky is the most likely destination for the latest films, so this isn't unusual. Rocketman will be streamed by Sky TV and Now TV for a short time, before Rocketman is available on Netflix.

Canada is receiving the latest Paramount releases, such as Downsizing and A Quiet Place, along with Mission Impossible: Fallout. Rocketman will likely follow.

As for Australia, we’re uncertain on what the arrangement is between Netflix and Paramount. Although Netflix Australia received Mission Impossible: Fallout in its first week, Paramount's previous releases were not available. If Rocketman doesn’t arrive on Netflix then Amazon Prime and Foxtel are the likeliest to receive the biopic.
