The CW is relaunching Superman as part of its new DC series. Superman and Lois are new series that will start airing in 2021. Superman & Lois will be available on Netflix, just like the other series of The CW. Let’s take a look.
The last time we saw the duo on our screens was back in the 90s Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman which aired on ABC (and currently doesn’t reside on any streaming service) in the 90s.
Todd Helbing is developing Superman & Lois. Greg Berlanti stars Tyler Hoechiln, Elizabeth Tulloch and other characters. Like most of The CW’s lineup for 2020/21, Superman & Lois was a casualty of filming delays due to COVID-19. It was delayed and will now air weekly on The CW in the US from February 23, 2021.
Officially, Superman & Lois have not yet been streamed. While the CW app is the most convenient way to watch the series, it's expected that the series will end up being aired on HBO Max.
That’s where Batwoman ended up as the first DC show to fall outside of The CW contract that ended in 2019. Although The CW said that each case would be handled individually, WB aggressively resisted licensing to other shows in favour of HBO Max.
So right here right now, we’re not expecting Netflix US to get Superman & Lois.
This may seem like bad news but it is good news that Netflix will be able to stream some of DC's shows in America. They include Supergirl (final seasons), Black Lightning (final series), The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow.
While Netflix does carry a few of The CW’s DC shows outside the United States, more recent titles have gone elsewhere.
Stargirl, for instance, was sold off to Prime Video whereas Batwoman in most instances still doesn’t have a streaming home outside the United States. Black Lightning is, however, marketed outside of the US as a Netflix Original Series.
We suspect Superman & Lois will be sold to a streamer but as of the time of publishing that’s yet to be announced.
We’ll keep this post updated as and when we learn more of the streaming plans for the new Superman & Lois series.
