The story synopsis for Netflix’s Rebel Moon has been revealed by The Hollywood Reporter. The movie's inspiration comes from Star Wars, and was originally pitched as a Star Wars film a decade back.
The story is set in motion when a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. Desperate, the colonists dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand.
In November 2021, additional plot information was made available for the film:
“The film is set in a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius. They dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand the Tyrant.”
Zack Snyder has shared concept art from his Vero account for 2021 to give an indication of the kind of things you can expect.

Netflix’s Rebel Moon entered production on April 18, 2022 and is expected to wrap on November 4 of the same year. Zack Snyder shared the first behind-the-scenes images from the very first days of filming, including a first look at Djimon Hounsou’s character:
ProductionWeekly first informed us that filming would take place between March 1st, 2022 and August 31st, 2022. ProductionWeekly recently updated us that filming has been moved forward over a month. Filming will now begin April 18, 2022 and end November 4, 2022.
According to recent entries, a second installment of Rebel Moon is already being greenlit by Netflix. ProductionWeekly issue 1284 states that parts I and II will be shot back-to-back.
The filming will be done in Inyo County, California. The popular tourist destination has been a popular filming destination with over 400 Hollywood films reportedly filmed here over the years and boasts that it’s the “largest Western backlot located in Lone Pine, CA”.
Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope was filmed in Death Valley National Park. The Return of the Jedi took place at Inyo, California.
Rebel Moon, which was first developed as a Star Wars pitch a decade back, is now a Disney Co. product. It would be a more mature take on the universe created by George Lucas and didn’t move beyond meaningful conversations after The Walt Disney Co. acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. Ironically, we found out years later that a slightly maturer take on the universe could be what would revive the franchise in The Mandalorian.
At one point, Snyder and Newman, who was behind Narcos and Narcos Mexico, went down the path of making it into a series, but it was ultimately decided to make Rebel Moon a feature film, on which Snyder was actively working the past few years:
“I’ve spent the last two or three years building out this universe. Every corner has to be painted in. I’ve been doing designs, constantly drawing and really cultivating its fertile ground to make this world fully realized.”
Snyder already has multiple Army of the Dead projects on Netflix. Now the question is: Will Rebel Moon do the same? Snyder’s answer to that is “hopefully”.
“My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”
With multiple parts reported above, it’s certainly set to receive the cinematic universe treatment.
Netflix hasn’t set a date for Rebel Moon yet, but considering the potential scope of the production, we shouldn’t hold our breath as films of this scale tend to take a few years to make. At the very least, 2023 would be our target.
